Artist: Timothy Easton
Timothy Easton describes his approach to painting as “a preoccupation with light”. His beautifully crafted, evocative and varied oil paintings include landscapes, coastal scenes, still lifes and gardens. He usually paints from life, only using photographs in paintings such as his series of the Henley Regatta where detail is so important. A great source of inspiration to him is the garden he and his wife Christine have made at their home, Bedfield Hall, in Suffolk.
Encouraged by his father’s passion for collecting paintings and his own keen interest in drawing, Timothy had decided by the age of 13 that he wanted to be an artist. From school he went on to Kingston College of Art and then, with a scholarship, studied at Heatherley’s in London. Here he won an Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation Award that enabled him to travel for a year in Italy and northern Europe. On his return he began work as a portrait painter and church muralist, completing several commissions for large figurative murals, including those at the Church of the Good Shepherd, Tadworth and the Theological College, Salisbury. In the early 1970s Timothy decided to concentrate full-time on sculpture, and for the next 15 years his imaginative bronzes were featured in numerous exhibitions in this country and abroad. A further change of direction in his career took place in the mid-1980s when, inspired by the renovation work at his new home and garden at Bedfield Hall, he began to paint again, quickly establishing a reputation as a garden and landscape artist. His paintings have featured in many one-man and mixed exhibitions, both in the UK and abroad. He has shown work with the New English Art Club since 1990, and other notable galleries and venues have included the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition; the Hunting Group Competition; Brian Sinfield Gallery, Oxford; the Cadogan Gallery, London; Chris Beetles Ltd, London; the Museum of Garden History, London; and the Manor House Museum, Bury St Edmunds. In 1996 Timothy was awarded the Winston Churchill Memorial Trust Fellowship for an artist working in architecture. His book, Oil Painting Techniques (ISBN 01734-8007-6) was published by Batsford in November 1997 and his paintings have also featured in several other publications as well as on many greetings cards, CD covers and prints. He has worked at Art in Action, Oxford, for several years.
